Hope
October 25, 2006

We are Metro fans. In eleven years, we've seen Metro lose in every possible way. And headed into this weekend's do-or-die situation in DC, few of us are expecting Metro to do. But we still watch, those of us who are left. We still watch, because there is still that glimmer of hope. What's that? Hope?

That's right. Hope. For after years of failure, there is still a chance. It's only one game. Metro is only one goal down. Anything is possible, right?

And who knows, an early call could go their way, and a penalty could be buried. Or they could keep it scoreless for the bulk of the match and score in a waning moments. And then extend it to overtime, and win it there. Or on PKs. Please tell us they are practicing their PKs.

And maybe Youri Djorkaeff finds something in his 38-year-old body for what could be his last game. Or maybe Amado Guevara rises to the occasion, like he did in the regular season finale. Or maybe Jon Conway stands on his head to keep DC off the scoresheet while Metro scores on the other end. Or maybe Josmer Altidore gives us another moment of brilliance. Or maybe sub-for-a-minute Taylor Graham gets his dyed hair to the ball and into the net or sub-for-a-minute Steve Jolley gets his bald head to the ball and into the net in injury time. Or maybe John Wolyniec gets hacked down, stays up and scores. Or maybe Peter Canero will rise from the grave. Or maybe...

Or maybe the soccer gods will finally smile on Metro. We can only hope, right?
